Elfyn Evans WRC Champion — the Rally Italia Sardegna title-decider special | By Paul Chappell, Founder, SIMPRO Academy Phuket | 19 October 2026 | 9 min read

Elfyn Evans WRC Champion is now official. The 37-year-old Welshman clinched his first FIA World Rally Championship drivers' title at Rally Italia Sardegna on 4 October 2026, after a final-stage drama in the Sardinian hills that swung the entire season in the space of a few corners. Evans finished fifth on the rally itself, but it was enough — Oliver Solberg, the man standing between him and the crown, ran wide on the very last special stage and slid down a bank, handing Evans the title by a margin of just five points.

It is the kind of finish that reminds you why rally is unlike any other form of motorsport: a season decided not on a podium, but on a single mistake, on a single stage, with nobody watching the big screen because there isn't one. As a lifelong motorsport enthusiast who has put himself through a professional rally driver training course, I felt every second of that final stage reading the reports — and it is exactly the kind of fine-margin drama we try to recreate for guests on our rally simulator rig here at SIMPRO Academy Phuket, at Boat Lagoon Marina.

    Inside the Sardinia Title Decider

The Elfyn Evans WRC champion moment did not happen on a podium — it happened on a gravel bank, in real time, with no replay to review. Rally Italia Sardegna has always been one of the World Rally Championship's toughest gravel tests — rough, fast, and littered with jagged Sardinian rock that shreds tyres and suspension in equal measure. In 2026 it carried extra weight as Round 13, the unplanned season finale after Rally Saudi Arabia was cancelled outright due to regional unrest. Based around Alghero over four days and roughly 17 stages covering around 307km, it was never going to be a quiet decider, and it wasn't.

Elfyn Evans arrived in Sardinia with a 17-point lead over Toyota teammate Sami Pajari and a 21-point lead over Oliver Solberg, needing only to manage the gap rather than win outright. Solberg had other ideas. The Swedish-American driver took the rally lead and pushed hard all weekend, eventually winning the event outright — his third victory of the 2026 season and his second in a row after Rally Chile. Sébastien Ogier finished second, Sami Pajari third, Hyundai's Adrien Fourmaux fourth, and Evans fifth. Takamoto Katsuta, Jon Armstrong, Thierry Neuville, Mārtiņš Sesks and Josh McErlean rounded out the top ten; Dani Sordo retired.

None of that mattered for the title fight until the very last test: the Power Stage, which carries bonus points on top of outright position. Solberg needed a strong result there to keep the championship alive into the final kilometres. Instead, two corners from the finish, he ran wide and slid down a bank — a split-second error that cost him the stage points he needed and dropped him to eighth on that final test. It was enough. Elfyn Evans, with co-driver Scott Martin, was crowned 2026 FIA World Rally Champion the moment Solberg's result was confirmed.

The final standings tell the story of just how close it was: Evans finished the season on 243 points, Solberg on 238, and Pajari on 237 — a gap of only five points between first and second, and six between first and third, making it one of the tightest championship finishes in WRC history. Evans's own reaction said as much. His first words after the result sank in were simple: "It hasn't sunk in." He called the whole finish "surreal," and admitted he had been certain the title was already lost before Solberg's mistake changed everything. His father Gwyndaf Evans, himself a former rally driver, was seen celebrating wildly at the stage finish.

From Five-Time Runner-Up to World Champion

What makes the Elfyn Evans WRC champion story land so hard is everything that came before it. Evans had finished runner-up in the World Rally Championship five times across the previous six seasons — agonisingly close, over and over, to the title that finally arrived in Sardinia. Earlier in the 2026 season he had also won Rally Japan for the third time in four years, a result that now reads as the foundation of his title push rather than just another good weekend. With this win, Evans becomes Britain's first World Rally Champion since Richard Burns in 2001 — a 25-year wait — and only the third British world champion in WRC history, after Colin McRae in 1995 and Burns himself.

The manufacturers' story was less dramatic but no less historic. Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT had already wrapped up the manufacturers' title at Rally Chile a month earlier, with one round still to run, finishing the season on 662 points to Hyundai Shell Mobis WRT's 440. It was Toyota's sixth consecutive manufacturers' title and its tenth overall — a number that now equals Lancia's all-time WRC record. With Evans, Solberg and Pajari filling the top three spots in the drivers' standings, Sardinia capped a season in which Toyota's own cars fought each other for the title as much as they fought Hyundai.

Train for Your Own Sardinia Moment: Rally Simulation at SIMPRO Academy Phuket

You don't need to fly to Sardinia to feel what decided this year's championship. Every guest who books a rally session at SIMPRO Academy Phuket gets a small taste of the margins that produced the Elfyn Evans WRC champion result. At SIMPRO Academy Phuket, our rally setup runs EA Sports WRC Rally and Assetto Corsa Rally on the same Simucube 2 Pro direct-drive wheel base (25 Nm) and Simtrecs load-cell pedals we use for our circuit racing simulations, paired with triple 32-inch curved monitors for a genuine sense of the gravel closing in at speed. The force feedback through a direct-drive base like ours is exactly what makes a car step out from under a driver the way Solberg's did on that final stage — you feel the rear end go light a fraction of a second before it happens, which is the entire skill of reading a loose-surface car at the limit.

Our rally stage library already covers Monte Carlo, Rally Finland, Rally Portugal, Wales Rally GB, Rally Australia, Safari Rally Kenya and Rally Chile, so guests can run the same roads the championship contenders drove this season. If you're newer to sim racing altogether and want a grounding before jumping into rally stages, our beginner's guide to sim racing is a good place to start before booking a coached session.

What to Watch: WRC Enters a New Era in 2027

The 2026 season closed with the Elfyn Evans WRC champion storyline, but the World Rally Championship is about to change shape. The FIA World Motor Sport Council has approved an expanded 15-round calendar for 2027 — up from 13 rounds this year — opening with the 95th Rallye Monte-Carlo on 21-24 January, an 18-stage classic between Monaco and the French Alps that also debuts the next-generation "WRC27" rally cars. Rally Sweden and Safari Rally Kenya follow in February and March.

Two changes stand out. The WRC returns to the United States for the first time since 1988, scheduled for 26-29 August 2027 with the venue still to be confirmed, and Rally Scotland returns to the UK calendar on a three-year deal, running 30 September-3 October 2027 — timely, given Evans just became the first British champion in a generation. Rally Italia also moves house, shifting from Sardinia to Rome for 8-11 July 2027, while Rally Portugal drops off the calendar entirely, pushing Rally Japan up to become Round 6. Rally Saudi Arabia, cancelled outright this year, returns to close the 2027 season on 25-28 November.

On the gaming side, EA Sports WRC ended active development after an August 2026 patch, with no further official season update planned — the community has stepped in with an unofficial mod to keep the current roster current. It's a reminder that platforms like Assetto Corsa Rally, which SIMPRO runs, are increasingly where active rally-sim development is happening.
