Sim racing is simulated racing that prioritises physics accuracy over arcade-style entertainment. Unlike casual racing games, serious sim racing platforms like iRacing, Assetto Corsa, and Automobilista 2 model real tyre grip behaviour, weight transfer, aerodynamic downforce, suspension stiffness, and brake lock-up characteristics. The key distinction: sim racing demands the same techniques that work on real tracks.
Professional racing drivers and Formula 1 teams actively use simulators for training and race preparation. A factory F1 simulator replicates the car’s behaviour with such precision that setup changes and lap time deltas transfer directly to circuit performance.
The realism matters because it teaches you to drive correctly. In sim racing, there is no shortcut around learning proper technique. Bad habits developed in an arcade game will work against you in a realistic simulator. Conversely, skills developed on a realistic simulator transfer directly to real-world driving and track days. Getting started with sim racing the right way means learning these physics from day one.
A functional home rig requires five components: a racing wheel with force feedback, load-cell pedals, a display (monitors or VR headset), a PC or console, and a rig or cockpit.
| Tier | Budget (USD) | Wheel / Base | Pedals | Display | Rig |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | $500–$1,000 | Logitech G920 (belt-drive) | Logitech basic | Single 27″ monitor | Wheel stand |
| Intermediate | $1,500–$3,000 | Thrustmaster TS-PC or Fanatec | Load-cell pedals | Triple 27″ curved | Cockpit frame |
| Professional | $3,500+ | Simucube 2 Pro (direct-drive) | Simtrecs load-cell | Triple 32″ 4K curved | Full cockpit |
| SIMPRO Academy | 1,300 THB/session | Simucube 2 Pro direct-drive (25 Nm) | Simtrecs load-cell pedals | Triple 32″ curved + telemetry screen | Professional rig |
Entry level ($500-$1,000 USD): Logitech G920 wheel, basic pedals, single 27″ monitor, mid-range PC, wheel stand.
Intermediate ($1,500-$3,000 USD): Thrustmaster TS-PC or Fanatec wheel, load-cell pedals, triple 27″ curved monitors, high-spec PC, proper cockpit.
Professional ($3,500+ USD): Simucube 2 Pro direct-drive wheelbase, Simtrecs load-cell pedals, triple 32″ 4K curved monitors, full cockpit rig.
For those in Phuket: SIMPRO Academy offers dedicated training sessions on the Simucube 2 Pro direct-drive wheelbase paired with Simtrecs load-cell pedals and 32-inch curved triple-monitor displays. No setup guesswork – you arrive and drive.
Not all sim racing platforms are equal. The table below shows the key platforms rated by realism:
| Platform | Realism | Best For | Cost Model | At SIMPRO? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iRacing | 9/10 ★ | Competitive online racing, skill development | Monthly subscription | ✓ Yes |

SIMPRO Academy primarily uses iRacing for its ranked structure, physics accuracy, and professional racing team adoption.
When getting started with sim racing, these are the fundamentals to master first. Racing is not about speed – it is about precision, consistency, and smooth inputs. These are the fundamental techniques that separate competent drivers from beginners.
The apex is the innermost point of the turn. A proper racing line starts outside, clips the apex late, and exits wide. Targeting the apex correctly allows you to carry more speed through the corner by reducing the sharpness of the steering input required. Spend 15-20 laps on any new circuit learning each corner’s optimal apex before worrying about lap times.
Threshold braking means applying maximum brake pressure without locking the wheels – right at the edge of grip. Trail braking extends this by gradually releasing brake pressure while entering the corner (maintaining 10-30% brake force), transferring weight to the front tyres. Trail braking requires finesse and is critical for speed into high-speed corners (120+ km/h entries).
Smooth, progressive throttle application prevents wheelspin and maximises tyre grip. Professional drivers gradually feed in throttle as the car straightens, allowing suspension to load and tyres to find the grip limit. This progressive approach is the difference between predictable fast lap times and inconsistent, sideways exits.
Weight transfer during braking moves load to the front tyres; during acceleration it moves to the rear; in corners it shifts outward. Smooth brake/throttle transitions keep tyres in their grip envelope. Brake smoothly over 1-2 seconds, turn in gradually over 0.5 seconds, and apply throttle progressively as weight settles at the apex exit.
Understeer (push) – front tyres lose grip first; the car runs wide. Fix: brake earlier, reduce steering angle. Oversteer (slide) – rear tyres lose grip; the rear steps out. Fix: reduce throttle, apply light braking.
Modern sim racing provides detailed telemetry: brake traces, throttle input timing, steering angle, and lap-by-lap time deltas. Reviewing this data reveals where you are losing time (most often braking too late or carrying insufficient corner speed). Telemetry is the accelerated path to improvement.
Self-taught drivers plateau. An experienced coach identifies inefficiencies in your technique, explains the physics of why something isn’t working, and prescribes specific drills to correct it. This structured approach compresses months of trial-and-error into weeks of focused improvement.
Research from the University of Rochester and MIT demonstrates that action-based cognitive training – where the brain must process sensory input and produce motor output in real time – builds stronger, more durable neural connections than self-directed practice alone.
Two structured training programmes are available at SIMPRO Academy Phuket:
| Programme | Sessions | Focus | Who It's For | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Training Plan A | 5 sessions | AI Race Focus — fundamentals | Beginners & casual drivers | Complete a full race; solid fundamentals |
| Training Plan B | 10 sessions | Live Race Focus — full racecraft | Intermediate drivers, competitive racers | Compete online via iRacing; telemetry mastery |

At SIMPRO Academy Phuket, each 90-minute session follows a proven structure: 15 minutes pre-briefing, 60 minutes driving with real-time coaching feedback, and 15 minutes debrief reviewing telemetry, lap performance, and focus areas for the next session.
As someone who spent 23 years as a professional airline pilot – and held a Chief Pilot position overseeing flight training – I can confirm: structured training with professional instruction is how you develop safe, consistent skills. Nobody learns to fly by trial and error. The same principle applies to racing.
“The setup feels super realistic and the staff were really friendly and helpful.” — Min T, TripAdvisor, January 2026
“As for me it is much better than karting. Great alternative when you’re tired of the hot sun and the beach.” — Explorer, TripAdvisor, January 2024

“I didn’t expect to find something similar in Phuket. I now go there regularly and signed up my son. In a couple of months we’ll go out on the real track.” — O M, London UK, TripAdvisor, August 2023
If you’re getting started with sim racing, expect a steep learning curve in your first hour. Focus on smooth inputs above all else: smooth steering, smooth braking, smooth throttle. Speed comes later. Consistency comes before speed.
